….. Welcome to the TREASURER’s TITBITS page …..

Your Honorary Treasurer

(My 8 year old daughters view of what an Honorary Treasurer looks like!)

Alongside my role as Honorary Treasurer for the OHA I am also the Finance Officer for WHGS and that means I am based at the school. This gives me a great advantage as I am central to all the things that link the OHA and the School.

So I thought that every week I’d share little titbits of information that have crossed my desk.

They will come in various flavours: Successes, new ideas, school related items, boring bits and every Friday a “thought for the weekend“.

Hopefully we can get a dialogue going too on our Facebook pages.

So here we go with my week by week musings …..

Overdue Update – Tuesday, 23rd May 2017 ….

My apologies for the long gap since my last post; unfortunately, I’ve been busier than usual in my personal life recently and so haven’t been able to find the time to write my weekly (ish) musings.

However, since my last update, there has been a lot going on:

Annual Dinner on 8th April: we’ve had a very successful Annual Dinner on 8th April at Davyhulme Park Golf Club. I’m sure I’m correct in saying that everyone enjoyed the food and company along with speeches from Mr Mulholland, WHGS Principal, detailing recent and future changes at the school and Ex-pupil Lin Leadbetter, reminiscing about his time there. Our thanks to both, and to Davyhulme Park Golf Club for hosting us.

School Tour on 5th May:  The Principal very kindly agreed to host a tour of the school for a group of friends who attended WHGS (many) years ago. In all  seven OH’s made the date and thoroughly enjoyed donning hard hats and hi-viz vests for a privileged tour of the Main Building and New Hall which are undergoing refurbishment and transformation into a wonderful new dedicated Sixth Form Centre. I also attended, and guided the group around the rest of the school site, passing by the CCF Shooting Range and the new Primary Phase building, as well as a walk along the Science Block corridors and on to the Forum area where we spent quite some time looking at the timeline of the school’s history on the walls. One OH even recognised himself in one of the photographs! There are pictures posted on our Facebook page if you’d like to see if you recognise anyone.

The group then went on to Chancellors for lunch to continue sharing memories and by all accounts had a very enjoyable day.

We can’t always accommodate visits to the school by OH’s at short notice, in part due to the necessary safe guarding measures we have to take, but where we can the school is happy to facilitate any requests it can … just contact me to discuss and I’ll see what can be arranged.

Other Musings: I have had a request from an OH who’s grandson has just taken up cricket and so wanted to recount stories from his own playing days here at WHGS. It was with great pleasure that I was able to track down and send him copies of his match reports  from “The Hulmeian” … I hope you both enjoyed reading through them 🙂

I have also provided a copy of K P Thompson’s “History of WHGS” to another OH who enquired as to where he might locate a copy.

And I’ve had a few replies to my request for anyone interested in resurrecting the OHA Car Club. If anyone else has an interest in all things cars, please contact me to see what we might be able to organise in the future.

Finally, the Golf Society is holding its Ascension Day event this week, on Thursday, 25th May (see the “Events” and “Social Groups” pages for more info). Here’s hoping the weather holds up and you all have a great day! Let me know how it went 🙂

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEKEND – Friday, 24th February 2017 – LinkedIN & Networking…

A couple of OH’s have mentioned the OHA LinkedIn group. I’ve not really looked at this yet but wondered if any OH’s find it useful and use it to explore the networking possibilities this offers both socially and commercially. So this weeks thought for the weekend is how would you like to see this area developed?

ANNUAL DINNER TITBIT! – Last call for places at the OHA Annual Dinner….

We are just about to draft up the seating plan for this years annual dinner at Davyhulme Park Golf Club on Saturday 8th April. So this is the last call for those who are still considering attending. Get in touch with me asap to book your places.

TOUR TITBIT! – Tours arranged for Friday 5th May & Wednesday, 24th May 2017….

A group of friends got in touch with me via Facebook as they were planning a visit to Manchester and wanted to visit the school. So the date is set for 5th May. And another OH asked if we could organise another tour for the evening before the Ascension Day Golf Event, so that’s pencilled in too. If you’d like to come on either tour let me know.

SCHOOL TITBIT! – Wednesday, 22nd March 2017 – Blood Brothers play….

Opening night for this years school play  tonight. And a great success by all accounts. I’ve been looking on the internet and  came across some pictures and videos of past performances . Anyone care to reminisce ? Drop us a note for the next newsletter 🙂

SUCCESS TITBIT! – Tuesday, 21st March 2017 – Treasurer’s email update….

I’ve had quite a few responses to my recent email updating everyone on the various efforts we’ve been making to refresh the website, facebook pages etc. including a couple of telephone conversations with OH’s about tours of the school, and efforts in the past to re-establish the car club. Keep sending me your responses!

BORING TITBIT – This Wednesday, 1st March 2017 – OHA Committee Meeting…

The next meeting of the Committee will be held on Wednesday 1st March 2017 at the School. Start time is 7:00pm.

SUCCESS TITBIT! – Tuesday, 21st February 2017 – World Map of OH’s….

I’ve found an easy way to place markers on a world map to show just how widespread our OH’s are. Check out the map by clicking here and see if you can identify any of them from where they are …. if you’re one of them let me know how you came to be where you are.

NEW IDEA TITBIT – Monday, 20th February 2017 – Possible Tours of School….

There’s been some requests to have a tour of the school this week, so I’m looking to put something together early in May (8th ?) and another on 24th May (the day before the Ascension Day Golf Event). If you’re interested in coming along to see how the school has changed over the years or just want to see how much you still recognise, then drop me an email and I’ll keep you informed as we firm up the details.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEKEND – Friday, 10th February 2017 – Another plea to have a look at our Facebook pages…

I’ve put a couple of posts up on the Facebook pages and a few members have viewed them and one or two even “liked” them, but not much in the way of comments. Have a look and add a comment so we can all connect and share memories, etc.

NEWSLETTER FEEDBACK – Friday, 10th February 2017 ….

A lovely letter arrived today from the wife of a recently deceased OH who had read the latest newsletter and really appreciated the obituary article. Although its obviously a sad time, it was nice to hear that the OHA is able to bring some comfort.

BORING TITBIT! – Tuesday, 7th February 2017 – Website issues…

The website has been up and down over the last few days. At first I thought it was something I’d done getting used to all this new technology, but apparently it is down to a “server” getting a bit old and temperamental (I know how it feels 🙂 ) which hopefully should be addressed in the next week or too. If you’re reading this it means it’s working again !

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEKEND – Friday, 3rd February 2017 – Please have a look at our Facebook pages

Social media is a great thing for connecting people and sharing memories. Please try and make a mental note to check out the Facebook pages over the coming weeks as we try to refresh the content.

We want you to contribute to the posts … one little comment has the ability to bring memories flooding back. Get your posts on our Facebook pages and reply to others with your thoughts.

SUCCESS TITBIT! – Thursday, 2nd February 2017 – reuniting OHs….

Just received a letter from an OH who has recently been ill but wishes to be put in contact with long lost OHs from his days on the Rifle Range. 2 emails later and we have been able to put them back in contact.

Do you have memories of the Rifle Range? Why not share your reminiscences on our Facebook pages.

Would you like to make contact with past friends and colleagues from the School?

Let me know if you wish to be put in contact with other OHs and I’ll do my best to help.

SCHOOL TITBIT – Wednesday, 1st February 2017 – Upcoming Events ….

Year 5 trip to Quarry Bank Mill planned for this time next week – what trips did you go on? Post your memories on our Facebook pages.

School Play Rehearsals in full flow . This year’s play is Blood Brothers – check out the photo’s of past school plays on our Facebook pages.

NEW IDEA TITBIT – Tuesday, 1st February 2017 – Calling Car Enthusiasts Everywhere….

In the post today came a letter from an OH explaining he can’t make the Annual Dinner …. The reason being he’s going to the Woburn Abbey Classic Car Event.
Now this comes fast on the tail of Ian Case’s Newsletter article recalling his recent “Tour de Bretagne”, a 2 day car rally in France, with OH’s Mike Kerr and Gareth Morgan and partners.

I’ve had a couple more conversations this week on car related subjects, and my ears pricked up when I heard there used to be an OHA Car Club section.

What would be the interest I wondered in re-establishing it ?

Let us know if this is your thing …. look out in the next few days for Ian Case’s musings recalling numerous cars he has owned, raced, sold, and still wishes he had.

Post your thoughts, memories etc on our Facebook pages.

BORING TITBIT – Monday, 30th January 2017 – Data Protection Consents are rolling in…

Thanks to all that have sent these back. Have you done yours? If you haven’t done so already please dig the form out, complete it and put it in the post.
