We have had two very successful weekends at Hardraw. In October 2013, 22 of us ascended the Howgills in beautiful weather. We lingered over tea and cakes in Sedbergh before the evening meal at The Moorcock Inn at Garsdale Head.
In May, 19 people cam to Hardraw. As we left Horton in Ribblesdale the weather conditions were dreadful – cold and wet with a cloud base at 1000 feet. The objective was Pen-y-ghent via Hull Pot. Four of the party turned back at Hull Pot but the rest braved it and went over the summit. The evening meal at The White Hart in Hawes was excellent.
Newcomers to the group were David Fisher (ex-staff WHGS), Paul and Moira Hunt, Rachel Cosgrove (Frank’s wife), Phil and Jake Jane Gaskell and daughter Emily, Pete and Jane Davis and daughters Annaruth and Isabelle.
Unfortunately, it appears that Harris House will not be available again due to the recent sale of it by WHGS.
John Hardy, one of our founder members who was also the steward of Harris House, has moved home to Morpeth in Northumberland. Therefore we do not expect to see him so frequently on our outings. John has been the backbone of our cross-country section and will be sorely missed. We don’t know how to thank him for all the hard work that he has done for our weekends at Harris House over the last 14 years.
Our monthly meetings at Lyme West Parkgate have continued but the number attending has been on average only 5 although 11 different people have come during the season. The regulars have been John Hardy, Bryan and Mavis England, Malcolm Booker, John Wright and Paul Marlton.
Regulars who have come during the seasons, either to Hardraw or Lyme, are Geoff and Brenda Roberts, Chris Bryans, Dudley Harrop, Keith and Thora Leach and Graham Bennett. We have also welcomed John Cunningham, Louise and Alison Hardy and 6 members of Paul Marlton’s family.
In Spring 2013, a new group of 10 people did the ‘Coast-to-coast Walk’ – St. Bee’s Head to Robin Hood’s Bay. The group was Bryan and Mavis England, John and Louise Hardy, Malcolm Booker, Graham Bennett, Alan and Joyce Simkin, David Myers and Jack Warner.
Anyone interested in getting involved with the cross-country section should get in touch with Paul Marton at firstname.lastname@example.org.
