Ascension Day Meeting
Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf Club
Thursday 17th May 2012
Yet again we were blessed with fine weather at Chorlton and 22 members enjoyed the course which was in pretty good nick, considering the weather in the previous week. Those attending were, in no particular order,; Andy McLaren, Paul Hunt, Mike Kerr, Malcolm Booker, Andrew Veitch, Terry Corfield, Neil Tattersall, Paul Swann, Andrew Marsden, David Marsden,
Malcolm Davies, Howard Stockwell, Glynn Stockdale, Tony Rodgers, Tony Bradley, Jim Wilde, Tom Warnes, Hector Bickerton, Eric Broadhurst, Ian Birtwhistle and newly appointed Captain, Iain Shaw
Also we were especially pleased to welcome Ken Irving, an ex-OH lacrosse player of some note, who was joining us for the first time.
Hector Bickerton’s continuing consistency in all events saw him challenging once again, for the best gross score but his 88 was not good enough to deny third place to Tony Rodgers’ 87. Andy Veitch had a lovely round to gross a commendable 85, but it was Eric Broadhurst, who lifted the Vlies Cup for the Best Gross score, with 84 points.
Unsurprisingly the same players featured in the battle for the Best Net score, with Ken Irving also coming in with a strong score to card a net 73. But it was to be Andy Veitch’s excellent net 67 that ensured a comfortable three shot victory in the end.
AKC Rodgers’ consolation prize, however, was to be to lift the Merchant Cup for the Best Stableford for members with handicaps of 16 and over. Tony carded a commendable 36 points, with Messrs. Shaw, Swann, Marsden (Snr), and Wilde, the best of the chasing group, all scoring 30 points are more.
North v South Match
Wednesday 20th June 2012
Chipping Norton Golf Club
The 28th Challenge match took place once again at Chipping Norton and a good turn out of members assembled at noon for the traditional bacon butties and chips.
The following members were present:-
Michael Mather (non-playing Captain) Mike Kerr
Iain Shaw Tony Martin
Dave Barnes Grahame Morrison
Malcolm Booker John Rubin
Tom Warnes (Captain) Ian Case (Captain)
Paul Swann Campbell McDiarmid
Roy Vernon Glynn Stockdale
Tony McGlue Neil Watson
David Marsden Tom Venables
We were very fortunate to have excellent weather for our match as the forecast for the rest of the week was not good. I watched some excellent golf and was able to visit all the matches on the course during the afternoon. At the 12th hole I was privileged to see 4 excellent drives with Malcolm Booker almost driving the green.
But the most memorable moment occurred on the 17th; Campbell McDiarmid drove into snake country and after finding his ball – his 2nd shot was purely a recovery shot. He then had a chance of making a 5 but his 3rd shot from some considerable distance finished a few inches away from the pin and he was able to claim a wonderful par!
The best individual scores on the day were Campbell McDiarmid 36 points, Dave Barnes and Tony McGlue level on 35 points each, and they received the usual golf balls for their achievements. In spite of Campbell’s efforts for the South, the North managed to retain the shield by a comfortable margin.
Wildlife seen on the course this year included a Buzzard on the 4th, 3 geese in flight on the 3rd, Dragonflies on the pond at the 8th and Jays on numerous holes. I also heard the call of a green woodpecker near at hand.
At the evening dinner, which was a splendid occasion, I thanked Iain Shaw for making the arrangements on my behalf and Ian Case for his work in the absence of Jack Edwards. Next year’s fixture is to be on Wednesday 19th June 2013, once again at Chipping Norton.
Inter-Old Boys Competition
Bramhall Golf Club
Wednesday 4th July 2012
Once again we could only muster a small team. This year we actually only had 5 players which meant that in a competition where the best six scores were to count, we were at a significant disadvantage…..
The Bramhall course was in excellent condition and I would commend any members who have not had the chance to pay there, to put their names down for the event next year, and to enjoy a challenging course with superb greens on which it is a joy to putt.
Old Maxonians 215
Old Waconians 196
Old Stopfordians 177
Old Stoconians 175
Old Altrinchamians 168
Old Hulmeians 160
Old Mancunians 152
Sale Golf Club
Friday 6th September 2012
This year’s event was supported by 34 members and we were delighted to have five new members, Andrew Daley, Ian Davis, Nick Holder, James Lord and Neil Roberts as well as several members returning to the fold for the first time for quite a few years.
Other players to attend, were; Iain Shaw (Captain), Andy McLaren, Mike Kerr, Tony McGlue, Paul Hunt, David Marsden, Gwyn Jones, Peter Veitch, Rob McLaren, Paul Swann, Tom Warnes, Peter Grossman, Malcolm Booker, Howard Stockwell, Roy Vernon, Campbell McDiarmid, Malcolm Davies, Hector Bickerton, Glynn Stockdale, Andrew Marsden, Andrew Veitch, Fred Fletcher, Eric Broadhurst, Tony Rodgers, Brian Collier, Dave Barnes, Tony Bradley, Peter Stansfield, and Tony Martin.
The Competition for the Captain’s Cup was an individual Stableford and was won by Peter Grossman who narrowly edged out David Marsden on a back nine card play-off.
Leading Individual Scores were;
1. Peter Grossman 37
2. David Marsden 37
3. Iain Shaw 35
4. AndrewVeitch 35
5. Ian Davis 33
6. Hector Bickerton 32
7. Andy Marsden 31
8. Eric Broadhurst 31
9. Andy McLaren 30
The day was enlivened by a Three-Man-Team-Yellow Ball Competition where each three ball were given a gilded pillock to nurse round the course. The ball had to be played in strict rotation, on a hole by hole basis, by each player in turn. However, only four teams managed to return the ball at the end of their round.
The record for the earliest surrender of the yellow ball must have been the Broadhurst, Barnes McGlue team, where Eric successfully negotiated the 1st, and Tony never even got to play the yellow ball. Of course, I would not embarrass the member who lost the ball on the 2nd, after it had been struck only seven times in total by naming him…….
One group actually managed to lose the ball on the 9th fairway !!, after the team members, Messrs. Veitch (Snr.), Stockwell, and Shaw spent their statutory five minutes looking in the rough beyond, while the ball lay on the short stuff, behind them.
The Team Competition was eventually won comfortably by the team comprising;
Gwyn Jones and
Andrew Daley posted the Longest Drive, in the first group out with the whole of the rest of the field failing to better his effort.
Peter Grossman claimed the Nearest the Pin prize on the 17th.
